“The New Iron Triangle for Problem solving: Stakeholder Management, Risk Management, and Communication” 

Every project manager knows the traditional Iron Triangle of scope, schedule, and budget, but the problems that derail projects rarely originate there. This session introduces a new Iron Triangle for problem solving: stakeholder management, risk management, and communication, the three interdependent forces where organizational problems actually take root. Drawing on real-world experience leading enterprise programs in healthcare IT, this presentation gives project managers a structured, systems-level approach for distinguishing risks from problems, confronting issues with clarity and composure, and pivoting decisively when circumstances change. Attendees will leave equipped to stop treating symptoms and start solving the problems that keep coming back.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the three root causes of most organizational problems: stakeholder misalignment, poorly managed risk, and inconsistent communication, and recognize how they interact as a connected system rather than three separate checklists.
2. Distinguish between a risk and a problem early, before the difference costs the project time, budget, or credibility.
3. Apply communication and stakeholder engagement strategies that keep teams aligned, build trust, and enable decisive execution under uncertainty.
4. Close the loop on problem solving by sustaining solutions, capturing lessons learned, and building anticipation, rather than reaction, into their project leadership approach.

Speaker Bio(s)

Zach Herman, MBA, PMP, LSSBB

Zach Herman, MBA, PMP, LSSBB, is the Director of IT Portfolio Management at UC San Diego Health, where he leads enterprise programs and portfolio strategy for one of the nation's premier academic health systems. With more than 20 years of experience in project and program management, including over a decade overseeing large-scale healthcare programs, Zach has built his career at the intersection of technology, process, and people.

Beyond his day job, Zach is an instructor at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies and adjunct professor at Mesa Community College, a doctoral candidate in Leadership Studies at LSU Shreveport, and the author of Project Management Made Practical and The Art of Corporate Resolution. Through his "Accidental Leader" platform, he speaks regularly at PMI and HIMSS chapters nationwide, helping professionals who found themselves in charge learn to lead with clarity, composure, and confidence.
