Launching a Career in Outer Space Projects with Matthew Paterson

Speaker: Matthew Paterson

May 23, 2024

Presentation Description

Description of Topic/Presentation:

Space inspires curiosity and wonder. Space can lead us to feel more connected or small and insignificant, while posing novel challenges in physics and science that were either unknown or only theorized one hundred years ago. Reusable rockets have expanded access to space in ways that are only just beginning to be realized. A growing number of opportunities in space will be tightly linked with those on the ground, with familiar project scope, and increasingly connected to daily life.

SpaceLab is an official 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to providing real, cross-functional project experience to early career tech professionals through outer space projects, with an emphasis on promoting leadership among women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community. In this talk Matthew Paterson, founder of SpaceLab, will share about a project to create a react.js website for the business and a 3D interactive application that uses AI to discover new planets around other stars.

This talk will walk you through lessons learned from experience in a volunteer team for how leaders were able to inspire and plan tasks without a paycheck for the participants, how time commitments worked, how each segment of the team was given agency, how new leaders emerged, what could have been done differently to address shortcomings, and why formal leadership skills and project management actions are necessary for a large undertaking.

You will learn:

  • How to lead with a grand vision of success - Leadership through Big Hairy Audacious Goals
  • The importance of creating realizable deliverables in line with the skill level of the team - Leadership through job satisfaction
  • How to navigate the pitfalls of optimism by celebrating wins and controlling shortcomings gracefully.
