"The 360 Degree Leader"

Author: John C. Maxwell

November 21, 2024

Presentation Description

Description of Topic/Presentation:

Back when we were young, we read all sorts of books for leisure, such as “Lord of the Rings”, “Harry Potter”, “A Wrinkle in Time”, etc. There was no requirement except that it was a good and entertaining read! However, things have changed now as adults – we also look for books that help us grow.  Especially since we are also project managers (or aspiring project managers), we look for relevant books to help us become better project managers, better members of a team, and better leaders.  Let’s make learning easier and have the material stick by taking part in the PMI-OC Book Club!

At this meeting, we will discuss the current book,  "The 360 Degree Leader" by John C. Maxwell.  We will explore the content and its themes and discuss possible actionable takeaways for our own projects.  The title refers to being a type of leader that can influence and affect an organization regardless of one’s position or level of formal authority within.

As one of the most trusted leadership mentors, John C. Maxwell debunks the myths that hold people back from leaning into and developing their influence. In this inspiring call-to-action, he shows middle managers how to leverage their unique positions and become 360 degree leaders by exercising influence in all directions--up (to the boss), across (among their peers), and down (to those they lead).

Learning Objectives from the Book:

  1. Practical Leadership Guidance: Maxwell’s strategies for influencing up, across, and down are highly practical and applicable to the complex role of a project manager, where success depends on leading without formal authority.
  2. Improves Team Performance: By applying the principles of empowerment and trust, project managers can boost team morale, collaboration, and overall performance, leading to more successful project outcomes.
  3. Enhances Stakeholder Management: The book equips project managers with the tools to better manage relationships with senior leadership, peers, and their teams, fostering a more cooperative and productive project environment.

Learning Objectives from the Meeting:

  1. Become a more effective leader no matter where your position lies in an organization.
  2. Discuss the book with others.
  3. Gain more perspective through integrating the perspectives of others.
