"How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business"

Author: Douglas W. Hubbard

July 18, 2024

Presentation Description

Description of Topic/Presentation:

Back when we were young, we read all sorts of books for leisure, such as “Lord of the Rings”, “Harry Potter”, “A Wrinkle in Time”, etc. There was no requirement except that it was a good and entertaining read! However, things have changed now as adults – we also look for books that help us grow.  Especially, since we are also project managers (or aspiring project managers), we look for relevant books to help us become better project managers, better members of a team, and better leaders.  Let’s make the learning easier and have the material stick by taking part in the PMI-OC Book Club!

At this meeting, we will discuss the second half of the current book “How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business” by Douglas Hubbard.  We will explore the content and its themes and discuss possible actionable takeaways for our own projects.

"Doug Hubbard’s book is a marvelous tutorial on how to define sound metrics to justify and manage complex programs."

Learning Objectives from the Book:

  1. Learn about what can and can’t be measured and its relationship to uncertainty.
  2. Learn that the size of “what can be measured” far outweighs “what can’t be measured” through debunking some myths about measurement.
  3. Learn about questions that need to be answered prior to measuring anything.
  4. Learn about various measurement tools and methods to use in our projects to measure supposed “intangibles”.

Learning Objectives from the Meeting:

  1. Gain a new perspective about the viability of measurement from reading the book
  2. Discuss the book with others
  3. Gain more perspective through integrating the perspectives of others.

Special Notes:

While the July 2024 Book Club Meeting will cover the whole book, the majority of discussion will revolve around the second half of the book (Chapter 8 to Chapter 14) as the first half of the book (Chapter 1 to Chapter 7) was covered at the May 2024 Book Club Meeting.
