"Accidental Agile Project Manager"

Author:  Ray Frohnhoefer, MBA, PMP, CCP

November 16, 2023

Presentation Description

Description of Topic/Presentation:

Back when we were young, we read all sorts of books for leisure, such as “Lord of the Rings”, “Harry Potter”, “A Wrinkle in Time”, etc. There was no requirement except that it was a good and entertaining read! However, things have changed now as adults – we also look for books that help us grow.  Especially, since we are also project managers (or aspiring project managers), we look for relevant books to help us become better project managers, better members of a team, and better leaders.  Let’s make the learning easier and have the material stick by taking part in the PMI-OC Book Club!

At this meeting, we will discuss the current book “Accidental Agile Project Manager” by Ray Frohnhoefer.  We will explore the content and its themes and discuss possible actionable takeaways for our own projects.

“What's an accidental agile project manager, you ask? Anyone who suddenly and unexpectedly finds themselves responsible for an agile project […] Congratulations, you just became an accidental agile project manager!  This book is the missing agile project management "quick start" guide for beginners, accidental, aspiring new agile project managers, and for those exploring agile project management careers or looking for a refresher.”

  1. Learn about the general characteristics of Agile projects.
  2. Learn about the PROJECT methodology - a framework for understanding and  managing projects.
  3. Learn about how to apply the PROJECT methodology to Agile projects for better understanding.
  4. Learn about when it is appropriate to use a Waterfall method versus an Agile method in order to avoid problems, issues, and risks downstream in projects..

Learning Objectives from the Meeting:

  1. Gain a new perspective from reading the book.
  2. Discuss the book with others.
  3. Gain more perspective through intergrating the perspectives of others.
